Carter fuel pump install

by Louge

My fuel pump failed twice on each of the last two off-road rides. I attribute the failures to shock induced points sticking (jiggling them got the fuel pump back online). The points show minimal wear at 17,xxx miles.

I decided the 1960s technology fuel pump had to go after laying in the mud four times to drop the skid plate. Pointman0853 got the ball rolling on this and leadvegas identified a second electronic fuel pump option. Although higher in initial cost I chose to go with the Carter over the Facet due to lower fuel pressure and rubber shock mounting. Installation poses challenges with either option.

Parts:

Two 1/8" 45~ elbows (Pep Boys 43020 or similar)
Thread sealant (T PLUS 2 or similar)

Safety wire (optional)

The black anodized fittings and hose clamps came with the fuel pump. The rubber mounting grommet has been moved to the new pump in this view.
