OUR WORLD OF MOTORCYCLES

The Honda St1100 is Honda's answer to the European sports-touring motorcycles. It was developed by Honda of Germany and released first in Europe as the Pan European and has enjoyed immense popularity there ever since. The ST was first introduced in the United States as the ST1100 in 1990 and has enjoyed a small, but enthusiastically loyal, following here to date. KTM 950 Adventure

Arguably one of the finest adventure tourers in the world. The KTM 950 Adventure was introduced in 2003 and quickly caused a great stir in the world of super dual sport motorcycles. Once the realm of BMW with it's GS series of go anywhere bikes, the new Austrian upstart calmly upstaged the Bavarian giant. Based on the same V-twin engine, lightweight frame, and WP suspension as the World Champion Paris to Dakar rally winners, the KTM 950 Adventure was basically a race bike in street clothing. Click on the photo of the KTM 950 to the left to view our H.O.W. (Hall Of Wisdom) pages. You can also find a great forum to discuss these bikes at the AdvRider Forum's Orange Crush.
After a somewhat hum-drum initial public reaction in the U.S., The ST has, with the growth of the internet, developed a niche in the long distance touring crowd. One of these groups, the Iron Butt Association, has quite a number of STs amongst its ranks. These "extreme" riders have come to appreciate this bike's great reliability, smooth stability, high mileage, and its "torque monster" engine. It is the platform from which they can pursue their highly demanding avocation with confidence and comfort.

Due to the loyal and enthusiastic following the ST1100 and 1300 has around the world, and the increasing popularity of the Internet, an entire community has been born that keeps up to date on the ST, and (Dis)organizes regional and national get-together's. The ST Owners Club is one of the largest and most tenacious. The STOC was the brainchild of the late Derek Catt, and for years was a totally virtual motorcycle club with members communicating only over the Internet via a list-server. The liST in its modern updated iteration is found at http://www.st-riders.net/
WeSTOC evolved from the desire for Internet ST owners to "Go Ride" together and put faces with names from the liST. WeSTOC was the first of its kind and was held in Park City, Utah in August of 1996. Later, other areas of the U.S. and Canada began holding STOCs of their own. But the first one will always be special, and the "dis-organizers" of this original began a tradition that has grown to include over 200 participants in this past WeSTOC XVIII (2013) in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. I have attended all 18 events. Next year's gathering WeSTOC XIX (2014) will be held in Fortuna, California, amidst the giant redwoods, on September 9th through 11th, 2014. Becci and I are proud to have hosted the 10th anniversary gathering, WeSTOC X, in San Luis Obispo, California in September, 2004.

Rick in Maui 1998

During the ownership of our two ST1100s, Honda CBR1100XX, BMW R1200GS and Rick's Honda Interceptor, Becci, Rick, and I have had some most excellent adventures. We have participated in all eighteen of the western area STOC non-organized events. WeSTOC 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. We have also had many other great rides. I have written about some of them. Others have also told of their mutual adventures. The link to the left will take you on some of those adventures via the printed word and photo images. Enjoy!
